Job Description |
SUMMARY
Manage, create and communicate compensation and benefit solutions across the organization. Perform a lead role in planning, developing, and redesigning company benefit programs and managing the company's investment in employee benefit programs. Act as a central contact and resource for total reward solutions for assigned business units and/or regions of the organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Develops global employee benefits and compensation philosophies and strategies, consulting with business leaders and employees on values and needs, as pertinent, and ensuring the effective allocation and appreciation of compensation and benefits costs and investments.
· Designs and implements employee benefit programs including group health, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k)/savings/retirement, and supplemental/voluntary programs. Designs and implements compensation programs which may include business specific bonus or recognition programs, spot/service and other company-wide programs.
· Participates in and reports on annual competitiveness assessment of global reward programs. Actively networks and identifies surveys and data sources for industry practices. Recommends modification to programs and assesses market risks as they arise.
· Manages global benefit program renewals in each region and country, including global workers compensation, global travel medical and other insurance programs.
· Responsible for coordination and planning of US annual enrollment, including implementation of vendors, employee communication, vendor management, and premium review.
· Manages the immigration program.
· Takes an active customer service role to understand, troubleshoot and resolve employee questions, concerns and disputes with compensation and benefit programs and providers. Serves as resource and reference for employee questions on any HR programs or policies.
· Counsels HR Business Partners on our compensation and benefit programs and creates education programs to ensure we consistently communicate our programs throughout the organization.
· Manages Worker’s Compensation and leaves of absence (LOAs), including FMLA, short-term disability, long-term disability, maternity, military, and unpaid leaves. Administers disability paperwork and coordinates with payroll and disability vendors.
· Responsible for communication and education programs, including brochures and summary plan documents, website information, new hire presentations, benefit summaries for candidates, total reward statements and vendor presentations and information dissemination.
· Manages savings and investment programs including 401(k), deferred compensation and ESPP
· Ensures company compliance with federal and state laws. Supports annual audits, reports and compliance with regulatory filings and testing including annual 5500 reporting.

REQUIREMENTS and SKILLS
· 7-10 years experience in human resources or consulting, with significant hands-on experience managing and designing benefits programs, policies and vendor relationships during that time. Global experience a plus.
· Strengths in Customer Service, Collaboration, Communication (verbal and written), Analytics.
· BA/BS desirable. A history of coursework in Compensation and Benefits, and active engagement in continuous education in the field.
· Demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness in building a strong rewards programs and following through on ideas and improvements to support being an employer of choice.
· Experience in advanced excel functions a huge plus
· An interest in developing expertise across the broad field of total rewards

Job Description |
The Head of Human Resources will be responsible for proactively guiding all aspects of the human resource functions at Ardea Biosciences and will report to the Chief Operating Officer. The incumbent will be a key member of the Executive Staff Committee (the most senior organization in the Company), and will provide strategic and tactical input to the continued development and heightened performance expectations of the overall organization, working with management and client groups alike. He or she will be responsible for advancing a well-established brand and highly motivating corporate culture together with expert level management of employee relations, performance management, and compensation with the associated programs of incentive bonus, stock and other rewards, benefit design and the employment process.
The successful applicant will have experience in large and small organizations, and will have a deep appreciation of the specialized features of research organizations, including motivational aspects for individual/teams of scientists and technical/clinical positions. This role will provide the right candidate with significant authority and influence in the organization, with the immediate ability to impact the company’s operations.
Essential duties and responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) include the following:
- Works with senior management team to understand strategies, assess current organizational health and performance, and develop/implement initiatives and plans to build required organization capabilities that support outstanding performance in drug discovery and development.
- Responsible for identifying current and future talent requirements at all levels of the organization and coordinating human resources strategies with overall strategic plan for the organization.
- Provides strategic direction of the human resource programs including workforce planning, recruitment/retention, employee services/relations, performance management, communication, regulatory compliance metrics/measurements and associated technology.
- Responsible for implementing initiatives and processes that emphasize a performance based culture.
- Proposes and advances technical tools (HRIS, ATS, on-line benefit programs, etc.) to ensure time efficiencies and accuracy of all data pertaining to employees and human resource programs.
- Evaluates and advises on the impact of long range planning of new programs and strategies on the attraction, motivation, development and retention of the company’s human capital. Develops staffing strategies and implementation plans and programs to identify talent for the company’s open positions.
- Continually assesses the competitiveness of all programs and practices against best practices for the industry and market.
- Develops progressive compensation programs to provide motivation, incentives and rewards for effective performance.
- Plans and directs implementation and administration of benefits programs; evaluates services, coverage and options available through insurance and investment companies to determine programs that meet/exceed the needs of the organization and supports the competitiveness of Ardea in the marketplace.
- Assures current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding human resources.
- Acts as senior level advisor on human resources issues to other executives and all levels of employees.
- Establishes credibility throughout the organization with management and employees in order to be an effective listener and problem solver of people issues.
- Maintains current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, best practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding human resources.
- Establishes and maintains networking relationships through active involvement and participation in human resource and industry groups.
- Coordinates management training in interviewing, hiring, terminations, promotions, performance review, safety, and sexual harassment.
- Perform duties in compliance with applicable SOX, FDA and state regulations.
Management Responsibilities: Directs Human Resource Function/Team as well as ancillary personnel and outside contractors. Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; motivating, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: BA/BS or equivalent years of experience in Business, Human Resources, or a related field. SPHR Certification and or MA/MS preferred. Minimum of 8-10 years of broad-based Human Resources experience with minimum of 5 years at senior management level including interactions with the executive management and Board of Directors.
- Experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry a strong plus.
- Experience working for a publicly traded company and knowledge of SOX regulations effecting Human Resource programs.
- Knowledge of current best practices within the human resource profession in addition to federal, state and local employment-related regulations.
- Knowledge of the trends and methods for attracting and retaining employees specifically in the biotech, pharmaceutical or other related industries.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and influence amongst a business team; approachable and an effective communicator with people across all levels in the organization
- Strategic planner with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus.
- Ability to provide vision, leadership, development opportunities.
- Demonstrated ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with all levels of employees in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to provide senior management with content-expert knowledge in the key areas of talent acquisition, regulatory compliance, performance management, compensation, and benefits.
- Strong leadership and strategic skills as well as business acumen especially focused in the biotech or pharmaceutical industries.
- Ability to recognize and design/implement innovative human resource programs in various identified areas within the function.
- Strong interpersonal and written, verbal and presentation communication skills, with the ability to develop a high degree of personal credibility across client groups.
- Technology savvy with ability to implement technology services. Must have extensive skills, knowledge abilities with computers and software programs including Word, Excel, and HRIS programs.
